Chips.gg Weekly Sports Betting Roundup (June 16 - June 22)

You ever have one of those weeks where the industry feels like it's holding its breath between major shifts? That’s where we’re at right now, the sports betting section of the iGaming world has been buzzing with tension, change, and just enough wild-card energy to keep every operator on edge.
But that’s not all. We’ve also got new firepower in the Chips.gg corner with two fierce new fighters stepping into the octagon!!
Wyoming’s Tax Wave Sends a Message to Sportsbooks
Let’s start with the Cowboy State. Wyoming isn’t usually the first place that comes to mind when we talk about big moves in iGaming, but lawmakers there just made a statement. During a recent meeting of the Select Committee on Capital Financing and Investments, state officials proposed a sweeping series of tax increases aimed at online sportsbooks, skill games, and historical horse racing.
If these proposals go through, online sports betting taxes could double from 10 percent to 20 percent. Skill-based game operators could get hit with a 25 percent rate, while historical horse racing would jump from 1.5 percent to 2.5 percent. That might not sound wild on paper, but here’s what matters: Wyoming is following a national pattern.
Canada Eyes Federal Control Over Sports Betting Ads
Now let’s head north. If you've watched a single hockey game in Canada lately, chances are you saw more sportsbook ads than slapshots. That constant marketing blitz in Ontario is exactly why Senator Marty Deacon’s Bill S-211 is gaining traction. It’s now being reviewed by Canada’s Senate Standing Committee on Transport and Communications, and it could finally put the brakes on what’s become a runaway ad machine.
This bill calls for federal restrictions on how and where online sports betting ads can appear. Think fewer prime-time promos and tighter rules on ad placement frequency. It’s a softer reboot of Deacon’s earlier attempt at a full ad ban, which failed to pass in 2023 after the federal election derailed progress.
Floorball Betting Scandal Rocks Finnish Sports Integrity
This next one feels like a script twist from a Nordic crime drama. Finnish betting operator Veikkaus just raised red flags over suspicious betting activity tied to high-level floorball matches. The numbers didn’t add up. And when you follow the money, what you get is a troubling picture of insider information being leaked.
Bets were placed on both club playoff games and national-level matches, including one during the 2024 Men’s World Championship between Finland and Norway. Some of the bets were unusually large. Others came from previously dormant accounts. It didn’t take long for Veikkaus’ Director of Security and Risk, Mikko Lahti, to admit that lineup information was being leaked from inside the teams.
One player was found to have placed tens of thousands of euros in bets over the season, often linked to games involving teams he was closely connected to. While there’s no hard evidence that players bet on matches they played in, this whole situation is murky and deeply damaging to public trust.
Team Chips Gets Tougher: McKinney and Gjetja Step In
Now for something a whole lot more fun. Terrance McKinney, fan-favorite and fast-rising UFC lightweight, is officially repping Chips.gg. That’s right. He’ll be stepping into the Octagon at UFC 317, and we’ll be right there in his corner.
But that’s not all. We’ve also got a brand-new warrior joining the crew, Armando Gjetja, who squared up against Ayadi Majdeddine last June 21. If you’ve never seen Gjetja throw hands, prepare for fireworks. This guy doesn’t just fight. He finishes.
So throw your support behind these champs. Win or lose, they’re fighting with heartand they’re fighting with us.
We see where the industry’s going. It’s not just about who has the flashiest banner or the deepest bonus pool. It’s about trust, flexibility, and the ability to adapt when the rules shift. That’s what separates the pretenders from the players.
Play smart.
And if you need a little fire to get through the week, remember this, Chips.gg doesn’t fold when the pressure rises.
We rise to the occasion.
