Sports betting is one of the most popular types of gambling around the world. From the long shot parley bet to the simple score line bet, the risk to reward is in the hands of the bettor. One less understood line for a sports bet is the Asian Handicap Total. It is most easily explained when compared to a standard Over/Under score bet.

Example of Over/Under

Over/Under: The over/under bet on a sporting event is simple enough. Bookies set a score for the game and bettors can place wagers on whether they thing the games total score will be over or under the specified number. If the exact number is the outcome, the bet is a push and there is no win or loss. Many times, the over/under bet will include a .5 so there is no push. For example, a sporting event has an over under of 3.5. Betting the over is saying that you think there will be a total score of 4 or more, betting the under is 3 or less and the outcome is easy to understand.

Asian Total: Asian totals add a little more to the standard Over/Under. Asian Totals can come in increments of 0.25 and include a “Half-Win” and “Half-Loss” outcome. The standard over under rules apply with the 2 new outcomes included:

Example of Asian Total
  • If an event has an Asian Total of 2.25 and you choose over, half of your stake is bet on Over 2 and the other half is on Over 2.5 with three possible outcomes:
  • Total score of 3 or more is a win
  • Total score for the match are 2, half the bet is a push and half the bet is a loss, therefore it is considered a Half-Loss
  • Total score is 1 or 0, the bet is a loss.
  • If an has an Asian Total of 2.25 and you choose under, half your stake is bet on under 2 and the other half is under 2.5 with three possible outcomes:
  • Total score of 3 or more is a loss
  • Total score of 2, half the bet is a push and half the bet is a win, there fore it is considered a Half-Win
  • Total score of 1 or 0 and the bet is a win.

The addition of the Half-Win and Half Loss makes the bet impossible to fully push, but gives the option to add a little more risk for a second chance to win, or lose instead of just getting your money back on a push.
